    Statement on Equity and Inclusion
    Posted June 2020
Like so many, I am deeply saddened by the unrest unfolding nationwide and in our local community. As there is turmoil across the country, we are also seeing inspiring images of passionate protestors and compassionate members of law enforcement standing in solidarity with one another.

I am grateful that at AtlantiCare and in our community we too have this ability to stand together to heal and safeguard one another. AtlantiCare’s core values of Safety, Teamwork, Integrity, Respect and Service are the cornerstone of our culture, and it has never been more important to exemplify Integrity in our daily actions and unwavering Respect for our fellow colleagues and community members.

We must demonstrate the grace, dignity and respect we all deserve. It is the same dignity and respect with which we honor the memories of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and, sadly, many others.

At all times, but particularly at this moment in time, the African American team members who serve our patients and community need to know they are heard and they are valued.

To our community, know that AtlantiCare stands firmly against racism, hatred and violence in all forms and is committed to the health and wellbeing of all, without bias or prejudice.

Equity and inclusion is not a onetime act. It requires daily commitment and action. We have taken many steps to create an inclusive workplace and care environment.

And, we recognize that to grow as an organization, our work is never complete. As we move forward, together, we are engaging in an honest dialogue throughout the organization to keep this important work moving forward.

As leaders in our community, we must continue to find opportunities to lead by example. These include:

    • Understanding that our experiences are not the same, but they all have merit

    • Accepting that each of us, regardless of background, have unconscious bias that must be challenged

    • Taking responsibility for living the change we wish to see

We will continue our ongoing focus of closing the gap in health disparities that exist among African Americans, from heart disease to maternal and infant mortality.

Within our organization, we are committed to building a better and more inclusive work environment. This includes unconscious bias training across our organization and a commitment to increasing the number of diverse candidates for leadership positions.

And, I am extremely proud of our 400-plus Employee Resource Group members for their selfless dedication to furthering our Diversity and Inclusion efforts.

Uniting against hate, racism, sexism, homophobia and classism is ongoing work, and we are all responsible.

It requires looking directly in the mirror to give an honest assessment of our actions and unconscious beliefs, and looking around for opportunities to educate ourselves, make meaningful connections and be inspired. These human connections make us stronger, both individually and as a group.

It is our responsibility to embrace the challenge of this moment to nurture an environment in which our diversity is our strength.

As we are committed to providing health and healing, one person at a time through caring and trusting relationships, we are also committed to ongoing education, honesty and self-reflection.

Caring for our community means caring for all members, and I thank our AtlantiCare Family for continuing to provide excellent care while living our core values every day.

    Keep making a difference,

Lori S. Herndon, RN, BSN, MBA
