Construction plant competent Scheme was initiated in 2003 for providing the skills cards to the plant sector of the construction and other allied industries. This scheme is continually amended and reviewed by the members of the COCS management committee as per the various external factors like the occupational health hazards, advances in the technology and etc.

If you are working in the construction industry in the UK, then the CPCS card is good to have by appearing for CPCS Test. It is recommended that the operatives that work in the construction sites must hold a CPCS Card. This card is continuously becoming in demand by the major reputed and top construction firms in the UK and in the near future, it can become a legal requirement as well to work in the construction industry as well.

The CPCS cards that are issued to the workers in the construction sector include the:

•Red CPCS card: This is the trained operator card and is the entry-level card in the construction industry. To get this card, one has to complete the CPCS theory and practical technical tests at the accredited test centres. After the successful completion of the CPCS technical test, the delegates will be issues with the Trained Operator Red CPCS Card which is valid for two years and is non-renewable in nature. The worker has to prove their competence in their category by taking the relevant NVQ test within the 2 years in order if they have to upgrade to the next level of card.

•Blue CPCS card: This is the competent operator card, which is upgraded from the red CPCS cards. The delegates have to complete the necessary required qualifications for getting this card.

The major question of these CPCS cards is their validity or for how long they are valid.
1.The Red CPCS cards are valid for two years only and are non-renewable in nature. The workers have to upgrade themselves in these two years to get the next level of card. If your red CPCS card has expired, then you can extend the Red CPCS cards from using one of the two routes:

•Extension for 12 months SVQ or NVQ: If you have the card, then you can get it extended within the 12 months from the expiry and then get registered for an SVQ or NVQ as per the relevant category.

•Additional 2-year cards: If you have a trained operator card that is expired by more than 12 months, hold for a valid CITB test and qualify the CPCS theory test within the two years of the CITB. After that qualify the CPCS practical test and be registered with the SVQ or NVQ.

2.The Blue CPCS card is valid for a time period of five years and can be renewed after five years by qualifying the renewal test for each category.
