‘Billions’ Season 5 Episode 5 Preview: Axe or Nico Tanner, who will Wendy choose to be with?
Four episodes down and ‘Billions’ has ensured there’s more to the complex finance drama than just revenge or raking in the moolah. For viewers who have caught up with the new season religiously, personal matters too, have taken the spotlight in the form of Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) and Wendy’s (Maggie Siff) divorce. That said, the new episode’s synopsis teases a massive move for the duo and speculations are rife about who Wendy will end up in a relationship with.
For now, most of the fans who have seen the chemistry between Robert ‘Bobby’ Axelrod (Damian Lewis) and Wendy have hoped it would be the two, but it does seem like there is a possibility of Frank Grillo’s Nico Tanner also throwing his hat in the ring. After all, some sparks did fly between the two in their first encounter and that is hard to ignore. As far as Chuck goes, fans have already decided that Julianna Margulies will be in his life sooner or later and it is only a matter of time. With the pair off to an easy and light start, that’s an easy call to make.
Coming to Axe, the move of vrooming off from his old house in Yonkers in the final minutes of the previous episode is sure to come with repercussions. With Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) taunting him, the rushing off may not have won him any fans or hearts from the community. In the promo for the upcoming episode, ‘Contract’, the focus goes back to Axe’s banking plans. Except, his proposal is declined. Wendy and Taylor (Asia Kate Dillon) discuss a partnership where Wendy asks for an offer.

How good is Bobby Axelrod when it comes to grandstanding? We thought he couldn’t get more Axe-y than last week’s “Greed is good” speech, delivered to an auditorium full of privileged youngsters. Apparently, he was just getting warmed up for tonight’s opportunity zone bid, which saw Yonkers, New York’s native son pouring his heart and soul into revitalizing his old neighborhood, or “ancestral lands,” as he arrogantly puts it at one point. Here’s the thing about Axe’s plea: I believe he believed he was sincere, and not just because he gave a shoutout to Ricky’s Clam House. At that moment, he was playing to win, which means he would do whatever it took to secure that deal, despite all the warning signs that he would bail.
That’s what made the final scene of this episode such a melancholy one. (The use of Mötley Crüe’s “Home Sweet Home” didn’t hurt either.) I wasn’t surprised in the slightest that, after Mike Prince conceded his defeat over the Yonkers opportunity zone, Axe immediately reneged on his promise to have dinner with Savion Williams (Akili McDowell), the 14-year-old African-American kid who now lives in the billionaire’s childhood home. Now that he’s triumphed over Mike, he realizes what we knew all along — That win was all he was after in the first place, regardless of how well he convinced himself otherwise. We could see that Savion was a pawn in his game, even if Axe couldn’t.
‘Billions’ Season 5, Episode 4 Recap: Contract
Winning isn’t as fun if your enemy no longer wants what you have. If Axe and Mike Prince are keeping score, it isn’t clear exactly who won this latest round in “Opportunity Zone.”
Axe (Damian Lewis) learns the hard way that winning isn’t everything. When he returns to his roots in Yonkers, he fights to beat Mike Prince (Corey Stoll) and Chuck Senior (Jeffrey DeMunn) in a bid for an up-for-grabs opportunity zone in his hometown. Winning would mean he could be directly involved in a major development project that would help the locals and benefit the community financially. These are his people, or so he says.
When Axe plays he does so to win and a well-planned article does the trick. He befriends a young boy, Savion Williams (Akili McDowell) and his mom, who currently live in the house he grew up in. Axe and Savion are photographed playing basketball outside the home and Axe tells the boy how he came up with his first entrepreneurial venture living in that house, on those rough streets shoveling snow for his neighbors. He hired friends, expanded into other areas and invested the money he earned into other ideas. This, he says, is how he got his start. “I have Yonkers to thank for my success,” he tells him as the two pose for the camera.
The article is a start but to get legit street credit, he needs to partner with someone who can help him gain the approval of the people. He tries to enlist Shark Tank’s Daymond John as a partner but this shark sees right through it and calls Axe out for trying to use him as a way to connect with the minority community.
