Laurel Canyon is a two-part doc series that pulls back the curtain on a mythical world and provides an up-close look at the lives of the musicians who inhabited it. Through a wealth of rare and newly unearthed footage and audio recordings, the series features an intimate portrait of the artists who created a musical revolution that changed popular culture. Uniquely immersive and experiential, this event takes us back in time to a place where a rustic canyon in the heart of Los Angeles became a musical petri dish. Featuring the music of Joni Mitchell, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Doors, Linda Ronstadt, Eagles, and many more.

Those were just a few of Michelle Phillips’ famous neighbors in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon in the late 1960s and early ’70s, where she co-founded folk group The Mamas and the Papas with then-husband John Phillips, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot.

“Cass had an open-door policy – anybody could swing by her place any time,” Phillips says. “They’d smoke a joint, drink some wine and play their guitars. That’s how she got Crosby, Stills & Nash together: She heard them all singing (separately) and said, ‘You guys should sing together.’ And that’s how that happened.”

‘Laurel Canyon’ Riveting Documentary TV Series: Preview
A two-part documentary series, Laurel Canyon, will premiere this month on premium television network EPIX. As the riveting film unfolds, it explores the lives and evolution of the musicians – the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, the Mamas and the Papas, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, the Doors, Jackson Browne, Eagles, and many more – who inhabited that unique part of the Los Angeles music scene. Through rare and newly unearthed footage and audio recordings, the documentary features an intimate portrait of the artists who created a music revolution of the ’60s and ’70s that would change popular culture.

Alison Ellwood (History of the Eagles) directed it. Part one will premiere May 31 at 10 p.m. on EPIX. Part two airs one week later, on June 7.

One of the film’s frequent interview subjects is the well known photographer, Henry Diltz, who became close with many of the era’s stars and documented it with countless images, scores of which are used in the film to great effect. He shares, in significant detail, his first-hand accounts of the artists he befriended and the iconic events he documented.

It’s the onion base of a million rock docs; beautiful people in an idyllic setting, coming together and creating music before drugs and egos get in the way. The setting in this case is Laurel Canyon, the much storied community up in the Hollywood Hills that was home to successive waves of L.A. musicians. It’s also a subject that’s been done to death, covered in Echo In The Canyon and any number of films about its famed former residents. Improbably, the new documentary Laurel Canyon finds something unique to say about the time and place. Broken into 2 parts, it premieres on EPIX Sunday, May 31, at 9 p.m. ET and concludes the following week, on June 7.

Directed by Alison Ellwood, who helmed 2013’s excellent History of The Eagles documentary, Laurel Canyon mixes archival footage and new interviews with a multitude of musicians who lived there during the golden age of the ‘60s folk rock boom and ‘70s singer-songwriter era. Photographer Henry Diltz is our primary tour guide. Like others, he came to Los Angeles to pursue his musical dreams and picked up his camera when they petered out. He would go on to shoot some of the most famous rock album covers of all-time and document the scene.

Laurel Canyon was cheap at the time and afforded the pleasantries of country living while being just a couple miles north of Hollywood and the nightlife of the Sunset Strip. The Byrds were among the first musicians to move there and others soon followed. As David Crosby says, “Once you got above 20 or 30 of us living up there, it was a kind of a community.”
