Blindspot boss explains season 5 premiere’s shock twist

Blindspot spoilers follow.
Blindspot’s season five premiere revealed the death of a major character following last season’s dramatic finale. Now, creator Martin Gero has explained why it had to happen, and how their passing will affect the crime thriller moving forward.

Going into the show’s final season, fans already knew that the lives of Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton), Natasha Zapata (Aubrey Esparza), Patterson (Ashley Johnson), Edgar Reade (Rob Brown) were at stake after a drone strike targeted their whereabouts at the end of season four.

And sadly, it was the latter who was fatally hurt in the chaos.
“There were some business reasons why we needed to probably lose a lead character this season, and that started driving the conversation,” Gero told TVLine. "Then creatively, we started to talk about who that would need to be.
“What would impact the story in a great way for the last season? As you get deeper into the season, I think you’ll see why it needed to be Reade for a bunch of reasons,” he continued. “His death plants a seed that ripples off into a bunch of amazing stories that we couldn’t necessarily do if someone else died.” During the premiere breakdown, Gero went on to praise the entire cast for being so understanding while they were gearing up to film the explosion that ended up killing Reade.

How does this season, in addition to gearing up towards the end, compare to the others from your perspective?

I think that the whole tone of the show changed season three, and especially in season four. We took a less violent approach to the episodes and made them a little bit more humorous, lighter.
But this season, we were given 11 episodes to wrap up this entire Blindspot journey. We were able to pack each episode with more than we would have in the past, having to spread it over 22 or 23 episodes. The tone is definitely different this season. We’re not at the FBI anymore. We’re not in a conference room or a lab. It’s a really interesting season because we get to dig even deeper into each character’s storyline rather than just the procedural aspect of the series.
