GAME DAY SCORING- Advice on What to Do & SBA By-laws
12 Mar by Natasha Kalweit
There have been a number of queries coming into the Club around scoring, so please take note of the below- this advice is to assist teams in how best to approach scoring; what the SBA rules around scoring and changes to scores are and who to contact if you have a question about scoring.
1- NEVER contact the SBA directly about scoring (or anything competition related)- all queries MUST come from the Club or they will be ignored. Please contact your Age Group Coordinator with any competition questions.
2- The SBA will NOT make changes to finalised game scores unless a By-law has been breached. Sending in Glory League footage will not make them change the scores. If you feel a By-law was breached, please email the evidence to your Age Group Coordinator with a detailed explanation; they will then confirm if they feel a breach occurred before forwarding anything to the SBA.
3- Below is the extract from the Bylaws about scoring, please make sure you read and understand these.
19. Scoring
19.1. Each Team is responsible for correctly entering players and their correct numbers into the scoring system prior to the commencement of the game. It is the scorer’s responsibility to ensure the correct points and fouls are awarded to the players. No changes will be made after the game has been finalised.
19.2. Each Team must provide one competent scorer aged 14 years or above prior to commencement of play. A Team without a scorer will incur a 10-point penalty, this will be applied no later than half time. This penalty must be applied courtside by the referees. Alternatively, the Team can sit one of their players off to score, playing with four players on the court to avoid the 10-point penalty. This player can be substituted, the player who takes their place then becomes the scorer.
19.3. Referees MUST not score and MUST apply any penalties for breaching this clause.
19.4. Scoring queries must be raised with the referee during play by either Coach or Team Manager.
19.5. If there is any conflict between the score on the scoreboard and the scoring system (iPad), the scoring system will take precedence. Scores cannot be changed after the game has been finalised unless a forfeit is awarded due to a breach of By-Laws.
19.6. During the game, a scorer is recognised as a game official and must act impartially. Referees reserve the right to remove any scorer from the score bench and have them replaced by another scorer.
19.7. Scorers and referees may not leave the score bench until the final score is checked, agreed upon, and finalised in the Scoring System.
4- Mentone Mustangs highly recommends teams have two people on the score bench during game play- one person to do the scoreboard or iPad and one to act as a 'spotter'. The spotter's role is to confirm what the referee communicates (player number/foul/number of points) and to then confirm it has been placed properly on the score board and iPad. If there are any concerns about what has been placed on the iPad, the spotter can then let the Team Manager know and the TM can then raise it with the referee/s.
5- If you have a scoring query please do the following:
a- At the time of the issue occurring- try to sort the issue out amongst the two scorers on the bench. If this does not resolve the issue, please let your Team Manager know so they can then approach the referee during a timeout, at halftime or at the end of the game prior to the iPad being finalised. DO NOT APPROACH THE REFEREES OR OPPOSITION COACH.
b- If you feel the issue has not been dealt with appropriately by the referee, the Team Manager, may choose to escalate it to the Referee Supervisor, this is their decision and it should be first discussed with the coach. Please respect the decision of the coach & team manager. Again, this must be done prior to the game being finalised on the iPad.
c- If you have a question regarding a By-law breach of any kind, please email your Age Group Coordinator with all evidence of the breach and a copy of the By-law you feel was broken. They will look into it in consultation with the Club and contact the SBA if there is grounds for further investigation. Please respect the decision of your AGC and the Club, if it is decided that it is not a breach.
If you have any questions regarding scoring or anything else game day related, please reach out to your Age Group Coordinator or your Team Manager who can contact the Club.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for helping us keep the competition fair and safe for all involved.
