Scoring - how to avoid and manage concerns
31 Mar by Mel White
Scoring is an important job. Save heartache by following these simple steps (taken from SBA by-laws)
ENSURE YOUR PLAYERS ARE ON THE SYSTEM
Each team is responsible for correctly entering players and their correct numbers into the scoring system prior to the commencement of the game.
PROVIDE A SCORER AT EACH GAME
Each team must provide one competent scorer of the age of 14 years or above prior to commencement of play.
A team without a scorer will incur a 10 point penalty will be applied no later than half time. Alternatively, the team can sit one of their players off to score, playing with four players on the court in order to avoid the 10 point penalty. This player can be substituted, the player who takes their place then becomes the scorer.
During the game a scorer is a game official and must act impartially. Referees reserve the right to remove any scorer from the scorebench and have them replaced by another scorer.
Your scorer should double check the score with the other scorer regularly during the game to ensure scores match.
HOW TO HANDLE SCORING QUERIES/CONCERNS
Scoring queries must be raised with the referee during the course of play. Once the game is confirmed by the referees no changes will be made to the score. Please do not contact SBA to ask for amendments after the game.
If there is any conflict between the score on the scoreboard and the scoring system, the scoring system will take precedence.
CHECK THE SCORES BEFORE YOU LEAVE
Scorers and referees may not leave the score bench until the final score is checked, agreed upon and finalised in the Scoring System.
