Day 2 Focus: Building Core Skills in Fielding and Wicketkeeping at Polonnaruwa
9 Apr by Coach Education Unit
On the 9th of April 2026, the Introduction to Cricket Coaching Course successfully progressed into its second day at the Polonnaruwa District Office and Thopawawa Ground, creating an ideal learning environment that combined classroom discussions with practical on-field application.
The sessions were carefully structured to emphasize the fundamental techniques of fielding and wicketkeeping. At the Thopawawa Ground, participants engaged in practical drills focusing on body positioning, balance, anticipation, and clean ball collection. The outdoor setting allowed coaches to experience real-game scenarios, highlighting the importance of agility, movement efficiency, and quick decision-making in fielding.
The wicketkeeping segment further built on these fundamentals, introducing proper stance, effective footwork, and glove work. Coaches also explored the leadership role of a wicketkeeper, understanding how communication and awareness can influence the overall performance of a team.
At the Polonnaruwa District Office, the learning continued through discussions on player assessment. Participants were guided on how to observe players, identify technical flaws, and provide clear, constructive feedback. This combination of indoor learning and outdoor practice ensured a holistic coaching experience.
Day 2 stood out for its balance between theory and application, using both venues effectively to deliver a comprehensive understanding of core cricketing skills. The programme continues to empower coaches with the knowledge and practical tools required to develop disciplined, skilled, and game-aware cricketers.
