From Sidelines to Lifelines: Uva Province Coaches Trained to Act When Seconds Matter
10 Feb by Coach Education Unit
A Basic First Aid Course for Uva Province school coaches and Uva Province coaching staff was successfully conducted at the Badulla District Cricket Ground, focusing on strengthening on-field safety and emergency preparedness in school and provincial sports programs.
The program was designed to equip coaches with essential, practical knowledge to confidently handle medical emergencies during training sessions and competitions. Key areas covered included basic first aid procedures, emergency response protocols, and life support techniques, all delivered through clear demonstrations and hands-on learning.
Special emphasis was placed on recognizing injuries early, providing immediate care, and understanding the correct steps to take until professional medical support arrives. This knowledge is crucial for coaches, who are often the first responders when an incident occurs on the field.
The day concluded with a formal assessment, allowing participants to evaluate their understanding and application of first aid and life-saving skills. The assessment also ensured that coaches left the program with a strong, confident grasp of the responsibilities they carry beyond coaching performance alone.
This initiative marks an important step toward creating safer sporting environments in Uva Province, empowering coaches not only as trainers, but as responsible guardians of athlete well-being.
