Today's Match at TYSON

19 Sep 2019 by Lisa Smith

When you enter Tyson Family Tennis Courts from Concord, you will see a gravel parking lot on the left and the tennis courts on the right. Park in the gravel lot and proceed up the sidewalk ramp. We will all meet at the covered picnic tables at the top of that sidewalk ramp. There are 14 Tennis Courts at Tyson and a small tennis office, I will get the court assignments and tennis balls from that tennis office.

RED BALL TEAMS

They should be on their assigned court at 4pm to “warm up”. If their opponents are there they will warm up with their opponents. The warm up should include each player taking turns practicing their “serve”. The serve at this level is a drop hit, just dropping the ball, letting it bounce, and then hitting it over the net. We really don’t have the practices under our belt to practice hitting back and forth (“rally”) with the other team…..yet. So lets just let each player practice serving for the warm up.

At 4:15 they will start the match. The home team will spin their racquet to decide who goes first. On the butt of the racket handle there is a symbol. For example a Wilson brand racquet has a W. The away team would choose either M or W. Then the home team holds the racquet handle and spins the racquet and lets it fall over and it if landed with the letter the away team picked they could choose to serve first. I will find out at the tennis office whether Rocky Hill will be the home team or away team for this match.

For Doubles, for the team that gets to sere first, the player standing on the right side will serve first. For Red Ball, that player will serve 2 points. They get a “first serve” and if the first serves goes in the net or out of bounds they get a “second serve”. If they miss both the first serve and second serve , that is 1 point for the opponent. The same player will serve again, after 2 points, the serve rotates to the opponent team for 2 points and then back to our team for the player on the left to serve. Red Ball will play “sets” to seven points for 30 minuets. They switch sides after every “set”. It is very important that the child who’s turn it is to serve learn to not start serving until they are holding two balls, one in their pocket and one that they are ready to serve. With only 30 mins for their match, a lot of time will be spent chasing down balls. It is important to learn to be prepared as the server.

At the 30 min time limit. The players should come to the net and shake hands. We will have adults on the courts to help them.
