The former Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets midfielder Shaun Ontong had been coaching in India with Dempo SC.

Boroondara Eagles FC has today announced Shaun Ontong as its new senior women’s head coach.

Ontong’s appointment has come on the back of his recent stint as assistant coach to Australian coach Arthur Papas at Dempo Soccer club in the Indian I-League, with the side finishing fourth in the 2013-14 season.

As a player, Shaun Ontong most notably turned out for Hyundai A League sides Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets, while the midfielder was also captain of the Young Socceroos for two years under current Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou.

Currently only 28, Ontong is undertaking his C-Licence and will bring a wealth of knowledge to the Eagles from his varied experiences in football.

Boroondara Director of Coaching Manny Koutroulis was excited by the appointment, especially after running his first training session at the club on Wednesday.

“I was aware that Shaun was back in Melbourne and from that moment it was very clear to me that he would be the best man for the job,” Koutroulis said.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have secured what is a huge coup for the club.”

Ontong succeeds Filipe Simao, who stepped down last week due to work commitments.

Boroondara currently sits seventh on the Sportsmart Women’s Premier League ladder, having had a mixed start to the campaign.

The Eagles next game will be against South Melbourne Women’s FC at Knox Regional Football Centre on Sunday April 12.
