Wickersham Steps Down as Girls Head Coach

19 Mar 2021 by Rob McKinzie

After 3 seasons as girls basketball coach at The ACADEMY, Jody Wickersham has decided to step down this Spring. Coach Wick took on the task of starting the Middle School team in 2018 with only 8 girls – several of whom were 6th graders. Team interest grew quickly culminating in over 20 girls coming out for the team this year with Coach Wickersham presiding over both a Middle School team and the beginning of the girls’ high school team in 2020-21.
“I’ve been truly thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this program, and grateful for the support of the parents and Coach Mac. I’ve enjoyed watching these girls grow and being a part of their lives. Although this was a difficult decision for me, I see good things ahead for the program.” said Coach Wickersham.
Coach Wick is a video producer by trade, working for OGE the past 3 years in addition to his own video production companies. He hopes to be able to devote more time to family and career while still staying close to the program in some capacity in the future.
“Our community continues to be blessed by pioneers like the Wickersham’s who are willing to invest in our kids and our sports programs,” said Griffins Athletic Director Rob McKinzie. “Our young ladies improved their skills and have set the foundation for the middle school and high school teams moving forward.”
The search will begin immediately for Coach Wickersham’s replacement, as well as the first Varsity Girls Head Coach. Both the boys and girls High School Basketball teams, along with volleyball, will be founding members of the new Metro Athletic Conference starting in 2021-22. This conference will consist of many of the HCAA schools in the OKC metro area.
