Match Report;

Our third match of the year was against Wakefield Welfare (a startup team looking to play in the local Sunday league setup), this was their first friendly match as a team. All money raised was going towards a local youth team, Rothwell Juniors Girls U10s, to help towards their trip to play in Barcelona next summer!

Kick off! And one member of the Rothwell girls team took the kick off to get us underway. It was youth vs “experience” (we’ll say), the pace of Wakefield was always in the back of our minds and seemed to be part of their tactics with early balls over the top to their speedy wingers, fortunately we were able to soak this up to start and managed to keep possession a little to control the game. Even with that the first goal didn’t come until just before half-time. Jordan latched onto a backward header, managed to beat the left back down the byline for a nice square ball across the box for our new strike Gary Driscoll to finish (three in three for him). 1-0 at halftime.

Second half began and again we were able to continue with some good possession passing. An attempted through ball was picked up by the Wakefield keeper, who seemed to slip a little wen clearing the ball up the pitch, and instead it fell to our winger Ben Jackson who didn’t mess about and lobbed the keeper from far out. A great goal that can be viewed on our socials.

Wakefield came back into the game with a well worked goal, a quality cos found their player making a late run at the back post to volley it home. 2-1!

We restored our two goal lead not long after with some nice play down the wing between the two goal scorers Ben and Gary, for Gary to back heel a one-two pass back to Ben who slotted it in the net again for 3-1.

Ben was involved again picking up the ball on the wing from a wayward pass to play the ball to Andy Mason upfront, who spun his marker and smashed the ball in the near post to make it 4-1.

It was nearing full time but still time for one more. Wakefield intercepted a pass in the middle of the pitch and with two passes it landed to their right winger who hit a low shot outside of the box that slipped under our keepers arms to make it 4-2. And that’s how it ended. To say it was their first game Wakefield Welfare showed a lot of promise, a few more games under their belt and it will definitely be a different scoreline if we manage to play again. Great set of lads and joined us for drinks after in the local.

Most importantly we managed to raise a little extra towards Rothwell Juniors Girls fund. A successful local youth girls team who had just won a local tournament the day before. They still turned up to support us and joined us for the match team photo.
